Managing Ad Categories

Updated 5/2/2026

You can create new top-level categories and subcategories, edit existing ones, and delete empty ones. All category management takes place in the Categories tab at Administer Site > Classifieds > Categories.

Creating a Category

  1. Click Add Category (top right of the page).
  2. Fill in the category form:

Name (required)

Enter the name that will appear to residents and in the admin category list.

Parent Category (required when creating, shown for new categories only)

To create a top-level category, select None.

To create a subcategory, select an existing top-level category as the parent. Only top-level categories appear in this list — you cannot nest a subcategory under another subcategory.

Note: The parent category cannot be changed after the category is created. If you need to move a category, delete it and recreate it under the correct parent.

Type (required)

Select the category type from the dropdown. The available types are configured in your site's list settings.

Intro Text (optional)

Enter introductory text that will appear at the top of the category page when residents browse ads in this category. A rich text editor is available.

Visibility (required)

  • On — The category is visible to residents. This is the default.
  • Off — The category is hidden from residents and from the posting dropdown.
  1. Click Save.

Editing a Category

  1. Click the name of the category you want to edit.
  2. The Update Category form opens with all current values pre-filled.
  3. You can change the Name, Type, Intro Text, and Visibility. The Parent Category field is not shown when editing — the parent cannot be changed after creation.
  4. Click Save.

Deleting a Category

A category can only be deleted when it is empty — no subcategories and no ads.

  1. Click the name of the category you want to delete.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the Update Category form.

If the category has subcategories, a message is displayed explaining that the category cannot be deleted while subcategories exist. Delete the subcategories first.

If the category has ads, a message is displayed explaining that the category cannot be deleted while ads remain in it. Delete or move the ads first.

If the category is empty, a Delete button appears.

  1. Click Delete.
  2. A confirmation dialog appears. Click OK to permanently delete the category, or Cancel to go back.

Warning: Deleting a category is permanent. Make sure all ads have been removed from the category before proceeding.
