Setting Up Your Terms of Use

Updated 5/4/2026

The Terms of Use settings let you publish your community's terms of use, display a link to them in the site footer, and optionally require members to accept them before using the site.

Getting There

  1. Log in with an administrator account.
  2. Click Administer Site in the top navigation bar.
  3. In the left-hand menu, click Settings, then select Terms of Use.

Fields

Display Footer Link

Controls whether a link to your Terms of Use page appears in the footer of every page on your site.

  • On — A "Terms of Use" link appears in the footer, visible to all visitors.
  • Off — No link is shown. Members can still be required to agree during registration even when the footer link is hidden.

Terms Copy

The full text of your terms of use. Use the rich text editor to format the content with headings, paragraphs, and lists as needed.

Tip: If you need a starting point, click the sample terms copy link at the top of the page to open a sample you can adapt for your community.

Saving

After making changes, click Save at the bottom of the page. Click Cancel to discard changes and return to the admin dashboard.

Requiring Members to Accept

The Force Agreement setting controls whether members must actively accept your terms of use before they can access the site.

  • On — New members must agree to your terms during registration. Existing members who have not yet agreed will be prompted to accept after their next login. If they decline, they are logged out.
  • Off — Members are not required to agree. The terms page is still accessible if the footer link is enabled, but acceptance is not enforced.

To enable Force Agreement:

  1. Navigate to Administer Site > Settings > Terms of Use.
  2. Set Force Agreement to On.
  3. Make sure the Terms Copy field contains your current terms text. Members will see this text on the agreement screen.
  4. Click Save.

Warning: Enabling Force Agreement affects all existing accounts, not just new registrations. Any member who has not previously agreed will be prompted on their next login. Make sure your terms copy is complete and accurate before turning this on.
